Sacré-Cœur - Information on admission prices, opening hours, waiting times, tickets, and more tips

The Roman Catholic Church rises on the 130-meter high Montmartre hill over Paris. Around the church is the Montmartre artists' district. The brightly shining white church is visible from almost everywhere. From the Sacré-Cœur, you also have a wonderful view of or over Paris.

How do I get to the Sacré-Coeur?

The easiest way to get to the Sacré-Coeur is by using the Metro. There are two different stations near Sacré-Cœur: “Anvers” of Metro line 2 and “Abbesses” of line 12. Both Metro stations are located below the Montmartre hill. From the Metro, there are two ways to climb the hill to the church. Either use the stairs or the "Funiculaire de Montmartre" cable car. For example, if you have a day ticket for the public transport, you can also use the cable car for free with your ticket. Alternatively, a ticket for the ride can be purchased on-site. We recommend using the cable car on the way back, as the queues are usually much shorter going downhill than uphill. The view and the ride up or down the Montmartre hill are fantastic in both directions and are a part of visiting the basilica.

What are the waiting times at Sacré-Coeur?

The basilica is a very popular destination within Paris. Although admission is free, there can be long waiting times, especially during the summer months or in good weather, as many visitors flock to the Montmartre hill. The somewhat longer waiting times are due to the fact that there is now only one entrance to the church, located on the left side when standing directly in front of the Sacré-Coeur. At the entrance, visitors' bags are checked for prohibited items for security reasons.

What should be noted when visiting the Montmartre hill?

On and around the stairs to the Sacré Coeur Basilica, many “sellers” are always present, offering everything from friendship bracelets to photos, etc. Please do not engage in conversation with these people, as most of them only want to take your money. If approached, it's best not to react or to respond with a clear, loud "No". Furthermore, please adhere to the dress code in the basilica, as it is still a place of worship. Shorts and skirts that are too short are inappropriate, and your shoulders should be covered with clothing.

Le Petit Train de Montmartre

Le Petit Train de Montmartre - Route

Another great way to explore Montmartre hill and its surroundings is by taking a ride on the Montmartre Train (the little train). It takes you through and to the most beautiful areas, on a panoramic tour through Montmartre. At the same time, you don't have to walk up and down the hill if, for example, you want to explore the cathedral or the famous artists' areas. The ride starts at “Place Blanche”, right at the “Blanche” Metro station on line 2, and then takes you comfortably up the hill. There, you can disembark if you wish and later travel back down.

The train tour starts every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the season, daily from 10:00 AM. Only in January does Le Petit Train de Montmartre operate only on Saturdays and Sundays. A round-trip ticket is available from €8.00. Children aged 3 to 11 years pay €4.50 for a round trip on the "little train".
